Meadow's Litter

Domestic Rabbit litter, b. July 13, 2004

Maria recently rescued a rabbit from somewhere around Caledonia. We soon found out that she was pregnant! She gave birth during the night to 6 beautiful bouncing baby rabbits, on July 12-13. By morning she was looking very satisfied with herself and the whole litter was looking wonderful.

This is one day old!  The bunnies were all cleaned up by the time we discovered them, there was no mess anywhere in the cage.

Here is what the nest looks like.  Meadow pulled all this fur out of her belly and makes a soft spot for the bunnies.

Below are photos and information about each one, so we can keep everyone posted on adoption status.  Bunnies will be available for adoption by early September.  Please spread the word around to interested parties, they are not all spoken for yet.  Contact Maria for adoption information.  Give me an email if you just want to visit them.

Trouble

This one looks like trouble to me!

The Brown Bomber

OhyMy, isn't this one cute? We have taken a bunch of pics of this one, it is impossible to take a bad one!

Mr. Big Feet

This one has darker brown spots, pleasant personality.

Magellan

This one we call Magellan, he gave Sarah and Maria a heart attack on his second day of life. We went down to check on them and weigh them for the first time, when Maria noticed that there were only 5 babies in the cage! We looked everywhere, ripped the bedding and litter boxes apart, and re-counted the litter a dozen times. It kept coming up five. I helpfully suggested that Meadow must have eaten the runt of the litter, a kind of wild-kingdom thing. Anyway, I left to get a flashlight and went through the basement carefully. After 2 minutes of poking around the little bugger showed up hiding under a rolled-up rug, about 15 feet from the cage! He had jumped out of the box, slipped through the cage, and crawled that far on ceramic tile. Hence the name.

B. Rex--ADOPTED!

This one is one of the bigger ones, weighing 6.5 oz at 13 days. By contrast, Magellan weighs only 5.0 oz at this time. This guy has light brown spots and rex/velvet fur. None of the others have this type of fur.

Number 6--ADOPTED!

This makes 6!

Here is the litter at 1 week old.  Their eyes are not quite opened yet.  From the very beginning, however, they have this bizzare instinct to hop.  The little guy can be completely nestled in your hand and all of a sudden he pops up and goes flying.  Just like popcorn.

Meadow has been incredibly cool about sharing her litter with us.  She does not seem to mind visits, she usually keeps an eye on the litter but does not get upset about people handling them.  Twice now she has even hopped over and nursed the litter while we were playing with them.  What a great mother!
