| The mentoring group that I participate in
took a trip to the Mitchell Park Horticultural Observatory ("The
Domes") last week. Breon, my mentoring student, spent the
afternoon with the digital camera and took many wonderful pictures of
the group exploring the Domes. Thanks for the pics, Breon!

There are many more pictures of the trip to see. I have put them into a photo gallery, click here to see it. BTW, I am playing with some new scripts, please email me if anything is acting funny. |
Here is a picture of Breon and me at the Domes. Breon and I have been working together in the One on One mentoring program for about 6 months now. We are posing in front of the chameleon. Jasmine, Breon, Najah, and Seven in the garden train exhibit

Mentoring is a lot of fun. We meet once a week at the downtown YMCA, usually to work on homework and small projects. Our next big outing is an overnight at the Southwest YMCA, from 10pm to 6 am, March 22. Anyone want to help chaperone??? |

on One Mentoring Facts: What Every Prospective Mentor Should Know «
One on One meets an hour and a half weekly at sixteen sites
throughout the city of Milwaukee (see back for times & locations). «
Each site is partnered with a middle school serving students
from Milwaukee’s central city. «
Students are recruited based on interest in the program,
completion of paperwork, interview, and interest in improving in school. «
One on One encourages additional contact with students other
than the weekly sessions, but does not expect or require them. «
Mentors are required to complete an application, attend a
two and half hour training, interview, and clear a criminal background
check before being matched with a student.
«
Besides regular mentoring sessions, mentors are expected to
attend mentor meetings at least 3 times a year. «
There is no requirement of academic ability for mentors.
