We are building a 24x36 pole barn. This is ground breaking on July 5. First order of business is drilling 12 30" holes for the 6x6 posts. The holes go down 4' 6" and take about 25 minutes of bucking to auger out.

Each hole is filled with with about 12" of concrete on the bottom, to provide a footing for the posts. Mixing this much concrete on site was a big, big project. We made our own concrete from sand, gravel, and portland cement. Each batch of concrete takes about 15 minutes to measure, shovel and mix up. Each hole took at least 3 batches.

The first delivery of lumber.
Setting posts is backbreaking work. Maria, Mom, & Dad all helped out. We used measuring tape, triginometry, and a plumb bob to position the posts in the bottom of the holes. Then we backfilled, tamped, and checked for level.
The 6x6 posts are not ridiculously heavy, two people have no trouble walking them over and tipping them up.
